I am sure you will understand that the coaches have not been able to pick everyone they would like to, and that given the high standard of play, the final decision has not been easy.
If your name is on the list above, please can I ask that you confirm to me whether or not you are able to attend the Rugby Festival on Sunday between 10.30 and 2.30. If you do not confirm attendance by Wednesday 24 April, the coaches will assume that you are unable to play, and will substitute you for another player.
If you are not selected, I am sure your team mates would appreciate your support.
Mums and Dads, your help would also be much appreciated on Saturday 26th, so that the parents of the Junior players can enjoy watching their children play. Provided enough of us turn up on Saturday, the Junior’s parents will help run the day on Sunday, so that you can watch the games. Just a couple of hours of your time on Saturday will make all the difference.
And finally, there are a couple of tickets left for the “Night At The Oscars” – let me know if you would like to be there.
Thank you!

Tigers at the OL's Festival
Today the Tigers WON the Old Leamingtonians Festival. Not only did they win but they won it in style by winning every game. A big thank you to all the players involved because they all performed extremely well, delivering everything that we have worked on through out season. They all ran straight and hard, supported each other in attack and defended as a line - today was proof that if you do the basics in rugby well then you will always be difficult to beat. The Tigers beat OL's Hurricanes comfortably in the first game 7 - 3, beat OL's Spitfires 6 - 3 in the second game and then went on to win 5 - 3 against Stratford in the last game.
Player of the week was Lyle Sargent. Lyle scored some fantastic tries by running straight to break the defensive line, followed by some great sidesteps to beat the covering tacklers. Lyle's defensive work was also very solid.
Lions vs Alcester
Despite the damp grey weather, we saw a glittering display of rugby today. Three games of the all-round game – great defence, great support, and great attacking.
As Alcester arrived with only 5 players, Luke, Aiden and Daniel D volunteered to change sides. A big thank you to each of you.
The first game saw Kenilworth take an early lead, with quick scores from Brandon, Sam, Daniel H (2), and Harrison. The second half was far more even, with only one score from each side (well done Tom). This was due to the excellent defence from both sides. Final score 6-3 to Kenilworth.
The second game saw Alcester start to take control, with some great support play by Luke, both receiving and passing. Although Brandon scored three times for Kenilworth, Alcester ran in 5, two of which were scored by Daniel D – great work Daniel! The second half saw some end to end play, with more great defence and support play. Three scores from Alcester (including one from Luke), and tries by Tom, Daniel H and Alice, meant this was probably the most entertaining half of the day to watch. Final score 8-6 to Alcester.
The weather got worse during the final game, but both sides continued to shine. Bryn, Tom and Alfie scored for Kenilworth, thanks to some outstanding support play by Sam, Harrison, and Alice. Aiden scored one of Alcester’s two try’s in reply. The last half again saw some outstanding play, with Robert L running in 4 for Kenilworth, while Luke scored 3 for Alcester. Final score 7-5 to Kenilworth.
With only our Festival still to play, today showed the talent that every one of you has – whether in defence or attack. As we have said to you all along, we are coaching you not just to become great players, but to be great team players.
Tony, Julian and I would like to thank you for your hard work during the 2007/08 season. I hope you have had as much fun as we have had!
13 April 2008
On a perfect day to play rugby, 25 Lions and Tigers trained for the last time as Under 8’s. A final session of mauling and tackling showed the coaches how well prepared you are for next year…
Remember, next season there will be more of you on the pitch, no coaches to tell you what to do, and it will be very physical! But you are all more than capable to play entertaining, fun rugby!
As well as reminding you of the basic techniques of mauling and tackling, we continued to coach you how to play as a team:
- Talk to, and encourage, each other
- Don’t huddle round the ball
- Look for space
- And, of course, run straight!
6 April 2008
Thanks to those of you who came along today – despite the snow a combined Lions and Tigers squad did some light training, played a bit of rugby and had a great snowball fight.
30 March 2008
Lions v Bournville
Today was a perfect day for running rugby; it was a shame that the pitch was a bit waterlogged and soon became muddy! This meant the games became quite tactical.
Bournville are a relatively new club at this level, and fielded a mostly Under 7’s side. I am sure they learnt a lot from us today – and showed that they have some talent by running in a few tries themselves.
The first game really showed the difference between the two sides, with Alfie, Alice and Robert (2) scoring quickly. In the second half, the tries kept coming, first from our newest player, Chelsea, then from Luke, and finally a swerving run from Daniel H. Bournville remained determined throughout, and were rewarded by a great try scored down the wing. Final score 7-1 to Kenilworth.
In the second game, Kenilworth’s confidence rose and, as Bournville’s tackling improved, our support play went from good to excellent. Winning turnover ball, Kenilworth used all the team to ensure that tries were scored. Tom (2), Luke, Rachel, Daniel H and Alfie ending up on the end of some great team work. Final score 6-2 to Kenilworth.
Kenilworth’s confidence became a bit too high by the third game, and Bournville scored an easy try quite quickly. It took most of the first half to regain our composure, and not get frustrated with each other by Bournville’s solid tackling. In the end our age and experience shone through, and our better team work enabled Luke (3), Robert, Sam, Daniel and Alfie to score. It was a true team effort though, and everyone had a part to play in the result. Final score 7-2 to Kenilworth.
To summarise, it is easy to become complacent when playing a team who are not so good. We need to keep focussed on our game plan, and not get cross when we make mistakes. What was also great to see was the welcome and support you all gave to Chelsea – well done!
Despite the mud, Bournville were excellent hosts, and we look forward to playing them again soon.
Tigers v Harbury
The weather was excellent for open running rugby - the ground was firm and dry, and the sun shining. After a very mixed warm up the Tigers soon got into their stride. All the players are now naturally running straight, supporting their team mates and defending as a line taking responsibility for their own tackles. By doing all the basics well the Tigers are playing some fantastic rugby which is very enjoyable to watch.
The Tigers played 3 games against Harbury winning 2 and drawing 1. The 1st game was won 6-4 and the highlight of the match was the support play - everytime a Tiger broke through the Harbury defence they were supported by 2 other Tigers which led to some excellent tries.
The second game was won 8-6 and in addition to the fantastic support everyone defended superbly keeping wave after wave of Harbury attacks out. This game was definitely won by the Tigers defence.
The last game was a tense match where tries were exchanged just about every minute. Both sides were getting very tired so a draw at 7 tries each was a fair result.
Player of the week was awarded to Chris R due of his desire to run straight and hard evertime he got the ball and also when tagged looking and passing to supportimg players very well. Although Chris didn't score he set up many tries for his team mates.
23 March 2008
Easter Sunday - no training.
16 March 2008
There was a cold wind blowing today, but you all stuck at it, and worked hard – well done.
The new basic techniques we are coaching are coming on well:
-
Tackles need to be low and hard – you have to want to knock the player over!
-
Tackled player – fall over, and place the ball so your team mates can get it.
-
Mauling – again, you have to want to get the ball! Working in pairs is more effective than on your own.
Once these basic techniques have been mastered, we will start to introduce other aspects of the game that you will be playing next year…
9 March 2008
The Lions and Tigers both went to Old Leamingtonians, who also had two squads, the “Hurricanes” and the “Spitfires”.
Another perfect day for running rugby. The ground was soft and firm, the sun was bright and the wind just the right side of chilly. With only one match left before our festival, you all had something to prove to the coaches who have to select the final squad.
Lions v Hurricanes
This match started like a rocket, with end to end running rugby, perhaps due to the recent contact training, missed tackles meant the first half ended 4 all. Jordan (2), Brandon and Aiden all scoring off the back of some great support play. The second half settled down as determined defence became the style, both sides camping on each others try line’s for several minutes. In the end Will B and Daniel H’s tries were just not enough, as the final whistle went it was 7-6 to the Hurricanes.
Tigers v Spitfires
The Tigers won this match!
Lions v Spitfires
Fielding a new squad (well, there were 17 Lions here today!) things looked a bit shaky to start with. The Spitfires were a determined bunch, and pushed hard. Luke and Alfie each scored twice in the first half. In the second half, our defence improved and some great turnover ball was won. Luke barged over from short range, and Robert J made two swerving runs to score. Final score 7-6 to the Lions
Tigers v Hurricanes
The Tigers won this match too!
Spitfires v Hurricanes
The hard work put in by these two teams was beginning to show, and basic mistakes began to creep into the game. Final score 5-3 to the Spitfires.
Lions v Tigers
The Tigers were on a roll, and facing the Lions’ who had rested since their first game, ran in some excellent tries. Tom C got one for the Lions, but it was 5-1 at half time. The Lions “second team” came on determined to claw something back and, thanks to Robert J, Alice and Rachel, out scored the Tigers 3-2 in the second half. It wasn’t enough though, and the Tigers finished the worthy winners 7-4.
| Played | Won | Lost | Points For | Points Against | |
| Tigers | 3 | 3 | 0 | ||
| Lions | 3 | 1 | 2 | 17 | 20 |
| Spitfires | 3 | 1 | 2 | ||
| Hurricanes | 3 | 1 | 2 |
Lions Player of the Week
Although Robert J doesn’t come down every week, when he does he makes a great impact, with some super swerving runs, good support play, and tackling. Well done Robert hope to see you more often!
2 March 2008 - Training Report
A perfect day to play rugby – a cool breeze, a bright sun, and a soft but firm ground. And you all worked really hard. Well done!
After our mauling practice warm up, it was back to tackling practice – this week our emphasis was on speed. Tackling needs to be done quickly and positively. Hit the player with your shoulder as you go in, aim to get them down in one go. It’s good to be aggressive in rugby, as long as you are in control!
As you start to focus on tackling, don't forget the basics - defence, support, team work.
A reminder that, although it seems a long way off, the end of the season is not that far away. As I mentioned today, we are restricted to the number of players who we can register to play in our Festival on 27 April. Those who will not be selected will get priority in an earlier game. For the Tigers this may be at Harbury, for the Lions, this will probably be against Alcester.
24 February 2008
Tigers v Broadstreet RFC match report
Broadstreet arrived at Kenilworth looking very strong and confident. The Tigers had to perform at their best to have a chance of beating a very well organised side. The Tigers had 18 players turn out so selection was very easy as it meant everyone played 1 game each apart from the lucky 3 who played twice !!
The first match was a great game to watch because it was full of end to end rugby with fantastic support and defence. In the first half tries were exchanged early on as the 2 teams sized each other up. However the second half saw the Tigers defence hold solid which enabled them to to stretch into a 2 try lead which they kept until the final whistle. The Tigers finished 7 - 5 winners.
The second game was very similar to the first except for the the Tigers defence which was fantastic for all the the game and not just the second half. The defence combined with great attacking and support play enabled the Tigers to take a comfortable lead. This gap was maintained until the end of the match which the Tigers won 6 - 2. The highlight of this game was the defence - the Tigers caused a turn over 5 times by achieving 6 tags before Broadstreet could score - this is tremendous progress.
The third game was totally different - Broadstreet 'found their legs' and the Tigers ran out of steam. The Broadstreet support play moved up a few gears whilst the Tigers defence went into reverse !! This is enabled Broadstreet to open up a significant lead which they maintained to the end winning 8 tries to 1.
Overall the morning was very successful - the Tigers played 3, won 2 and lost 1. The squad is really improving week on week and the confidence of the players is also increasing. This is creating a team that is now doing the basics very very well - players are running straight, supporting eachother and defending with passion. Any team that masters the basics will always be extremely difficult to beat - well done everyone.
Player of the week - this was awarded to Ben Thompson who was tremendous in defence but mostly beacuse of an incredible individual try at the end of the third game. Ben is always very solid in defence but doesn't score many tries, so to run in a try from his own half was fantastic to watch - even more so because he ran very straight and very hard !!! Well done Ben.
Lions Training Report
There are many definitions of skill; my favourite is “Skill is technique under pressure”. We are coaching you techniques to use when playing rugby; passing, running, and tackling to name just three. To be skilful you need to remember the technique when you come under pressure.
You have spent the last few weeks learning the technique of tackling (and being tackled!), and the coaches are now putting pressure on you – increasing the speed, allowing more players to get involved, making you think about passing as well as tackling, to see how skilful you are…The good news is that your skill is definitely improving!
As in previous weeks, there were too many of you doing great things to pick out one player of the week. So, if you made a good tackle, placed the ball on the ground after being tackled, and said something positive to a team mate – you can call yourself a player of the week.
Areas to work on:
- Talk to each other
- Listen to each other
- Support each other
Rugby is a team game – the team that plays together will win and have the most fun!
17 February 2008
Tigers v Keresley
Bit of a mixed day as they only had 4 U8's but we managed !!
On a very cold but clear morning the Tigers were at Keresley for matches against the home sides combined U7 and U8 team. The games were played on a very small pitch so running straight and finding support quickly was critical. The first game was won convincingly 7 - 3 with all Tigers players getting their fair share of the ball in attack and making many tags in defence.
The second game was a very different story as Keresley re-grouped well and played much better as a team causing the Tigers a fair few problems. However, a strong team spirit led to a very high scoring game which was eventually drawn 8 tries each.
Player of the week was awarded to Jacob Weeks for his direct running which caused many problems for the defence - but most importantly for his support play which was best seen so far this season. Jacob's timing for the support run and his pace at which he took the pass was superb and a lesson to all the other Tigers. Well done.
Lions v Berkswell and Balsall
On a perfect day for running rugby, we took to the field against a slightly disorganised Berkswell and Balsall with 13 players. This meant we made lots of substitutions during this, and the following games. This did not help our own organisation, and our defence was a bit creaky, allowing some soft ties to be scored against us, and our support play was a bit quiet.
The first half finished three all, with Luke, Aiden and Robert L each ending up on the end of some great passing play. The second half saw Harry C set off like a rocket, scoring two blistering tries, closely followed by two more from Robert L. If they hadn’t dropped the ball on the try line, Berks and Balls might have levelled it, final score 7-6 to Kenilworth.
The second game started much as the first, with our rolling substitutions ensuring everyone got a game, but disrupting our support play. Berks and Balls got three easy tries, but you dug deep and made sure that we levelled the score, with Robert L and Luke (2) on the end of more excellent support play. In the second half, The Lions began to pull away, with Robert J, Daniel H, Rachel and Robert L adding their names to the score sheet. Our defence play really began to work, with some great “running the opposition into touch” by Sam and Harry C. Final score 7-5 to Kenilworth.
In the final game, the Lions really got into their stride, with a great opening try by James G, closely followed by Robert L and Luke (with 2). The second half saw yet more tries from Luke (some great sidesteps), Rachel (a very determined run) and Harry C (a scorching run down the wing). Berks and Balls had run out of steam! Final score 7-2 to Kenilworth.
The most pleasing part of today was the way you all worked together as a squad. Next season, coaches are not allowed on the field during a game, and you will have to show the same sort of “self-organisation” that you did today. Well done!
Player of the Week
After a few weeks being kept in the bag, the Player of the Week award was presented to someone who has worked hard on his rugby, and although not the fastest or biggest in the squad, did exactly what was asked of him – run straight and fast, and keep going until you get tagged or score a try. And after a couple of jinks past the opposition, he scored a try! A big well done to James.
10 February 2008
Training Report
Well, we cranked up the physical training this week by introducing a new skill: Mauling. By the end of the session most of you were puffing and panting. As the weather gets warmer, don't forget to bring a drink of water.
Mauling
Remember, to win the game you need possession of the ball, so the key to mauling is to work with your team mates, not against them. Stay on your feet, use your upper arms and body to wrestle the ball, or help your team mate by pulling the opposition player’s arm off the ball. Once you have won the ball, pass it to a team mate well away from the maul.
We will be practising mauling many times, so get used to it!
Tackling
The tackling game we played to finish with was a reminder about the importance of tackling right first time.
Make sure your head is in the right position; get the player down on the ground (or into touch).
If you are being tackled, hold the ball in two hands, fall onto the side of your body. Once you have landed, place the ball on the ground so your team mates can pick it up.
Summary
You all worked really hard today – well done. Rugby is a physical game and we are just starting to get you used to the knocks and bumps.
You are all learning the basic skills of the game, the most important of which is to play as a team – support each other!
3 February 2008
Kenilworth Tigers v Old Coventrians
Today the Tigers played a very competent Old Coventrians side. On a very cold morning with an even colder wind, the big lesson was that if you concentrate on the basics, all the other parts of the game will fall into place.
The first game was a big lesson for the Tigers - they started the game like a well oiled Ferrari, scoring 3 very good tries but unfortunately finished the game like an old banger heading for the scrap yard. The team got too confident and forgot the basics of defence and consequently let the OC's back in the game. Poor handling then meant the Tigers lost possession on many occassions. After a terrific start the Tigers ended up losing the 1st match 8 tries to 4.
After a good chat about the basics between games the Tigers were soon back on winning ways. They won the 2nd game 7 - 6 because they ran straight, they supported each other very well and defended strongly - often a little to strongly and they had to be reminded that it was tag and not contact !!!!
This set up the last game as a winner takes all encounter, and I am pleased to say the Tigers responded very well - they all showed a huge desire to win. The game was extremely quick with tries being exchanged regularly. However, early in the second half the Tigers built a 2 try lead which they managed to keep until the final whistle - eventually winning 9 - 7. The overall score was the Tigers won 2 games to 1.
The 3 games were a credit to all the players - it was fast with strong defences but most of all played with fantastic spirit. The most pleasing part from a coaches perspective was the change after the 1st game - everyone in the squad listened, put it into practice and delivered against all the objectives.
The model professional and Player of the week was Finn Nicholas. Apart from 1 dropped pass, I don't think he put a foot wrong all morning. He scored because he ran straight, he set up tries for others because he ran straight, he scored because he supported his team mates and he defended very well - a very complete performance. Well done Finn.
Kenilworth Lions v Rugby Lions v Lichfield
In the freezing cold wind, we decided to run a tough warm-up session, to help get you focussed and stop you from getting too cold!
Our first game was against Lichfield, who looked pretty useful in their first game against Rugby Lions. They started very well, scoring four tries to our two (Alfie and Robert L ) in the first half. In the second half Kenilworth turned on the pressure, with excellent defence stopping any scores by Lichfield (a special mention to Alfie for “bundling” a player into touch!). Our support was excellent, helping us to score four times, Robert L (2), Aiden and Brynn. Final score 6-4 to Kenilworth.
We went straight on to play our second game. Rugby Lions are a well drilled side, with great defence, and some good passing skills. In the first half only Sam jinked his way over the try line, whereas Rugby Lions scored three times. In the second half our support play improved, and Brandon, Luke and Aiden each scored. Our defence also worked harder and only allowed Rugby Lions to score twice, the last score coming in the final seconds of the match. Final score 5-4 to Rugby Lions. It was tough to lose in the final seconds, but the result was a fair reflection of the two sides.
We sat out the next game (between Lichfield and Rugby Lions), and worked hard to stay warm! You kept your focus well, and in our final game (against Lichfield) there was some great passing. Brandon scored twice, and Robert L once. In reply Lichfield only scored once. The wind got stronger in the second half, but great teamwork meant you held onto the lead, with two more scores from Robert L , and one from Luke. Lichfield took full advantage of our mistakes, scoring three times. Final score 6-4 to Kenilworth.
So, played three, one 2, lost 1. Against two very strong sides this was probably a fair reflection of our skills and ability. It will be very interesting next season to see how many players from these clubs make the transition to full contact. From the one full contact tackle I saw today from a Rugby Lions player on Robert L, they are obviously working hard at this already!
27 January 2008
Training Report
Contact training is well under way, with the coaches focussing on the basic skills. Only once we are happy you are able to instinctively tackle correctly will we increase the pace of the games.
Key lessons:
TACKLER - From the side:
Cheek to cheek, at thigh level
Wrap your arms tightly around legs
Push them over!
TACKLER - From the front:
Cheek to pocket
Wrap your arms tightly around the legs
Pull them over your shoulder onto the ground – or, if you are able to, push them backwards!
TACKLED PLAYER:
Hold the ball with both hands.
As you are falling over, land on your side – DO NOT hold out an arm or hand to break your fall.
Place the ball on the ground so your team can pick it up.
Other thoughts…
• Once the ball is available, make sure you pick it up from an onside position – or you will get penalised!
• If you can't push the player over – try pushing them into touch!
20 January 2008
Lion’s v Earlsdon
There are days when everything coaches have been saying comes together and the players play “the complete game”. Some days it just can’t get any better – and today was one of them! The Lions put on a display of top class rugby that left Earlsdon wondering what had hit them as we attacked in waves of support. The coaches and parents have probably never seen a better display of solid wall defence, which often left Earlsdon nowhere to run except sideways and backwards! As there were 15 of you, we divided you into two “mini-squads”.
In the first game, Kenilworth started to score almost faster than the score keeper could keep count. Also, the Earlsdon coaches were very impressed with our defence “wall”, and excellent passing to supporting players. Our tries were scored by Sam (3), Daniel (1), Aidan (3), Luke (4) and Harrison (1). What made the victory even sweeter was the way that you organised yourselves. Tony was “running” the side, but actually gave very little support. The way you helped each other, supported each other and worked with each other was a joy to watch, and resulted in one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. Final score, Kenilworth 12, Earlsdon 5.
Earlsdon had clearly had a tough team talk and came into the second game with a different attitude. Our second team (led by Julian) played a different, more expansive style, which resulted in a few dropped passes. However, our defence was still excellent, and even though there were only two try scorers, Alfie with 2 and Robert L with 6, every player can claim some credit for passing and supporting at some stage in the play that led to each try being scored – another great display of team work. Final score, Kenilworth 8, Earlsdon 4.
Earlsdon were keen to get their revenge and play a third game. Our first team took the field for the first half, and continued the excellent supporting play and solid defence seen in the first game. Despite some tired legs, Luke touched down twice, with Aiden and Harrison also scoring. Again, these were not solo tries, with every team member having a part in the move that eventually led to the try. At half time it was Kenilworth 4, Earlsdon 0.
We changed over for the second half, and our second team were keen to finish on a high. Alfie scored three times and Robert L got one. As in the previous games, these were not solo tries, with every team member having a part in the move that eventually led to the try. Both teams were getting tired, and the inevitable dropped balls allowed Earlsdon to use their possession to score. Second half score was Kenilworth 4, Earlsdon 3, Final score Kenilworth 8, Earlsdon 3.
Played 3, Won 3.
Player of the Week
Given the demonstration of total team rugby today, every player can claim to be part of the team of the week. We are very proud of you all.
19 January 2008
An Under 8 representative side travelled to Dunstable RFC today, to play a “curtain raiser” before the 1st XV league game.
A big thank you to Daniel Hobbins, Sam Hart, Lyle Sargent, Robert Lester, Aiden Cessford, Rachel Carnduff, Alice Carnduff, Jordan Cox, and Tom Cockerill.
Despite the rain and a very muddy pitch, the game was played at a fast pace, with Dunstable opening the scoring with two fast tries. Kenilworth got back in the game thanks to some excellent support play by Sam and a dazzling run by Robert L . Sam scored again, closely followed by one from Daniel. Dunstable were not to be beaten and came back strongly, showing great attacking skills. Before the end of the first half Sam scored again, as did Dunstable. First half 6-5 to Dunstable.
In the second half Dunstable played a tight game, with short passes from tackles helping them to four tries in all. Kenilworth could have caught up, but lost several attacking moves by trying to pass the ball too far, and dropping it. A consolation try was scored by Aiden, who bulldozed his way over. Final score 10-6 to Dunstable.
If it's any consolation, the 1st XV got stuffed by Dunstable. On balance I'd say the Under 8's did better on the day!
Following the game, the two sides formed a tunnel for the 1st XV players to run through onto the pitch. Burgers, hot dogs and drinks were handed out and Dunstable looked after us very well.
Many thanks to the parents who supported the Under 8’s today – it was a great day out and a fantastic experience for the players.
13 January 2008
Despite the cold and damp weather, I counted 34 of you out there today – and to help keep you warm we got you stuck into some proper contact training.
Remember – to keep warm, wear lots of layers, a t-shirt, a long sleeved t-shirt, as well as your rugby top. Please don’t wear coats or tops with cords or strings. Hats are good, gloves are not so good.
So, how was the tackling for you? Key lessons to remember:
Tackler (from the side)
Cheek to Cheek, arms wrapped right round thighs, push ‘em over hard, count to 3 before getting up.
Tackler (from in front)
Cheek to pocket, arms wrapped right round thighs, push ‘em over hard, count to 3 before getting up.
Ball carrier
Carry ball in both hands, hold onto it tightly as you fall onto the ground, place ball so that your team can pick it up.
We will keep practicing the basics of tackling for several weeks. It’s a vital skill to learn, so it is important to get the technique right. Please don't try it at home, unless you have plenty of open grass, and a willing person to practice with!
The game we played at the end got you tackling in a match situation. The ball carrier moving forwards to try and score; the defending team stopping the attack by tackling as quickly as possible. It was great to hear you supporting your team mates. Rugby is a team game; the best player won’t win, but the best team will.
All in all, a great weeks work!
Just one final reminder – no gum shield means no tackling!
6 January 2008
Tigers Match v Rugby Lions
On a very small pitch the Kenilworth Tigers had a fast and furious welcome to 2008 against a very well organised Rugby side. The Tigers held their own at all times but ended up winning 1 game and losing 2 games.
The first game was won 9 - 6 and it appeared that teams were running off the Christmas pudding - defence was poor by both sides which led to the high scores. The second game was won by Rugby as they began to play some excellent running and support rugby - they always had a player in the right place at the right time which was a result of creative support play!!! The Tigers also scored some great tries but ended up losing 8 - 6. The last game was lost 7 - 5 and was a similar story to the 2nd game, Rugby supported very well but held their line in defence much more effectively.
The Tigers had lots of territory but couldn't quite turn it into tries. Despite losing 2 - 1 overall the Tigers had alot to be pleased with. The running was straight and hard (most of the time), defence was always tenacious and the support play was excellent - if the team hadn't dropped 3 or 4 passes in support we would have scored 3 or 4 more tries and maybe won another game. Well done to everyone.

Excellent Start to the new year and opportunity to make good use of the gum shields received as presents over Christmas... those that do not yet have gum shields yet can get them from the club shop which is adjacent to the BBQ in the club house rear car park.
Started with a warm up exercise - some running in pairs and then group A against group B sprinting which everybody enjoyed as a "frost" breaker.
Once nice and warm we then introduced a new game called Dodge - which we played with tags - teams A and B taking it in turns to play / watch - this game can progress to tackling once we are ready and practised in this new skill.
We then moved to learn the side tackle - starting slowly and progressing to a stage where everybody could happily tackle at jogging speeds - running will come later as we improve our tackling technique.
Things to try and remember when tackling
Tackler
Shrug shoulders on contact
Hit the upper thigh with the shoulder and drive with the legs Wrap arms around thighs and grip with arms and hands
Ball carrier
Hold the ball with two hands (You already know this) and curl the shoulders together to hug the ball in order to ride the fall - Do not put your hands out to break the fall - Get to your feet as quickly as possible The ball carrier should try to fall so the ball and player are facing the direction from where they ran.
We then started a game - not using contact and where then challenged to play the Kenilworth girls team - the girls team stole our own excellent female players and then fought hard to beat the remaining "Bibs and Shirts"
who alternated throughout the match as tries were scored - very close match with end to end scoring which was declared a draw at the end, and played in good spirit by both sides. Was great to see that we were able to take on a team of much older and more experienced players who found that we were no push over and had to work hard to keep the scoring even.
Lastly
Remember this was just the start of contact training - you still have much to learn. It was good to see that you were all able to learn and use the side tackle so effectively in a relatively short training session - it is very important that at all times you listen carefully to your coaches as we progress the contact training and that you keep you eyes and ears open at all times so that you do not miss any important training tips.
Also remember that tackling others who do not play Rugby, or who are not expecting to be tackled, could easily result in them being hurt, so save it for Rugby where we can make sure a controlled environment is provided for you in which to practice and progress the new skills you will learn in the safest way possible.
Well done to everyone - today every player was a player of the week - excellent Rugby from everybody with very good listening and good side tackling from you all, was great to see all of you making excellent "contact" tackles.
We are all training at home next week, so see you for some more tackling practice !
16 December 2007
Despite the cold, it was good to see so many of you out again today. Please remember to wear lots of layers to keep you warm – hats are definitely this years training “must have” gear!
We didn’t spend much time training this week – it was good to see you doing what we have asked you to do in the matches between Lions and Tigers.
A big thank you to all who stayed on for the party. I hope you had fun!
The next rugby date is Sunday 6th January. 10.30 start. Check the web site to see where you need to be.
On behalf of all the coaches, have a great Christmas!

9 December 2007
The Lions’
The few minutes spent warming up showed some great skills and concentration – running straight, good passing and excellent talking to each other. Rugby is a team game and, as you get older, the more you talk to each other, the better you will be as a team.
The first game was a real “end to end” game, with tries from both sides being scored fast and furious. Sam opened our account, with a great piece of support work, closely followed by two by Robert, and then one each from Alfie and Brandon. Stratford also scored five, keeping the game level at half time. As usual, we mixed our team around a bit in the next half, which gave a bit of an advantage to the opposition. But by running straight through the defence, Robert and Alfie both scored. Great support meant that Bryn got one, and Alfie got another. Although our defence was always great against the first phase of play, after making one tackle, you tended to forget to keep the wall, and Stratford took their opportunities well. Final score 9 all.
In the second game, we tried a new mix of Kenilworth players. The two key lessons were to run straight, and shuffle the defence wall. The defence was not as good as it had been in the first game, and although Aiden and Robert each barnstormed their way through to score, Stratford had scored 5 by half time. A stern talking to about defence at half time seemed to do the trick. By holding the wall, and shuffling left and right, Stratford couldn’t find a way through, and only scored twice. In contrast, with the ball in hand, some inspired support play saw several passes resulting in two tries for Harry and Alfie, and a great supporting try for Tom. Final score 7 all.
As the rain began to fall, we decided to play one final game. Again it was end to end stuff, Daniel H, Tom, Aiden and Brandon each got one in response to Stratford scoring. In the second half both sides defences were working really hard, and Stratford only scored twice. Robert scored a great swerving try and, in the last minute, Aiden made a perfect straight run and scored our final try. Final score 6 all.
The Tigers’
Similar performance from the Tigers - Lost 1, Won, 1 Drew 1, so fantastic result considering Stratford were fielding strong sides - intially the Tigers had to lend three of our players so well done to them for helping the other side to beat us in the first game. Also well done in the conditions which were at times testing.
Key lessons from today:
Talk to each other
Shuffle the defence left and right, as well as forwards. Don't forget to put the tackles in!
Run straight
Lions Player Of The Week
After missing out so closely in recent weeks, it was great to see Aiden still working hard and doing what the coaches are coaching you all to do: running straight, supporting, and being a team player. And always with a big smile. Well done Aiden.
Tigers Player Of The Week
A big well done to Jacob.
Next Week
Next week is our last training session before Christmas. We will be looking to see who has remembered what we have been coaching, before joining in the Christmas party in the club house. Do stay and join in the fun.
And Finally
Make sure you include a gum shield in your list of “things you want for Christmas”. Full contact training starts in the New Year…
2 December 2007
On a cold, rainy, blustery day, the coaches knew that this was going to be a tough fixture. It was good to see that so many of you were wearing lots of layers, to help keep you warm. A special mention to Bryn for his woolly Spiderman hat!
Shipston were warming up early and looked good. As our side gradually came together, the coaches needed to say a few hard words to get you to focus and concentrate on the games ahead. Well, you did us proud, with some stunning defence, and some great running and supporting!
The first game was played in heavy rain, with an early try by Aiden, closely followed by one from Sam, and two from Rachel. Shipston didn’t know what had hit them, and our defence work was so good they only managed 3 in reply, despite having most of the possession. In the second half, Brandon and Tom each scored once, and Alice got three! Final score 9-7 to Kenilworth.
In the second game we shuffled the players around to make sure you all got some match time. Sam scored a great try through good support, Aiden bulldozed his way to the try line with a great straight run, and Daniel scored one of his typical swerving try’s, both cutting the Shipston defence to pieces. Unfortunately Shipston had had a good team talk after the last game and made the most of their possession, scoring 5 excellent tries in reply. In the second half, Rachel took the ball and scored three solo tries. But by now the weather was taking its toll, and all players were looking tired. Shipston continued to tighten their defence, and improved their passing, scoring four times. Final score 6-9 to Shipston.
The coaches from both sides agreed the standard of play had been excellent, in particular the defensive work, and support given by players to their team mates. Well done to you all.
Player of the Week
As a result of the high standard of play by all, this was a tough decision. The winner was a player who has worked hard all season, and again gave his all, helping organise the defence, talking to his teammates, and supporting them all the way to the try line, picking up a couple of tries for his efforts. A big well done to Sam Hart.
Next Week
Next week the Lions and Tigers are at home, playing against Stratford.
The week after – 16 December
The week after is our final training session before Christmas. There is a party after training with a disco and some games, so stay on for some fun! There may even be a surprise visitor…
Next year
We start to coach full contact next year, which will raise the game to a very different level. If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask a coach. It is essential that you wear gum shields when we play contact… If in doubt about what kind to get, please ask a coach. Gum Shields are available from the green caravan at Kenilworth.
Also, as the game becomes more physical, please think carefully about what clothing to wear, even proper rugby shirts and shorts will get ripped, so don't throw those scruffs away just yet!
And finally!
25 November 2007
The reputation of Kenilworth Under 8's is spreading, and striking fear into all other clubs, as only 5 players from Claverdon turned up to play the Tigers. To ensure a game could take place 5 Tigers players joined Claverdon - so a very big thank you to Archie, Rosie, Kieron, Joe and Seb who played for the opposition with minimal 'fuss'.
The first game was a relatively low scoring game as both teams were still waking up. There were lots of errors on both sides but the Tigers eventually won 5 tries to 3. The 2nd game was significantly better with both teams playing some excellent running rugby. Tries were exchanged many times through out the first half, and then the Tigers capitalised on a number of unforced errors by Claverdon to win the game 7 tries to 4. The last game was very similar to the 2nd game - the first half was very close with tries being swapped in quick succession. But the second half saw the Tigers' pressure defence force Claverdon backgrounds and make more mistakes which led to Tigers tries. The Tigers won the last game 6 tries to 3. The final; score was played 3 won 3 - well done.
Tigers Player of the Week
The Player of the Week was awarded to Finn Nicholas who played very well and, most importantly, ran straight, supported his team mates, and defended strongly.
Today was very encouraging as there was a noticeable difference between the Tigers skills and application compared to those from Claverdon. The Tigers appeared a lot more 'switched on' and really understood the best way to score tries was to run straight and hard, and not backwards or side ways. Now that the Tigers are getting much better at the skills needed, they now have to start focusing on working together as a team. This includes supporting your team mates when mistakes are made and not all squabbling for the ball at restarts - remember it is usually the supporting players that score tries rather than the ones who start with the ball - especially when you play against a side with a good defence!!!
Lions v Berkswell & Balsall - 25 November 2007
Despite the cold weather (again!), we had an excellent turnout today. It was good to see that most of you were wearing lots of layers of clothing. The hats looked good too!
Berks and Balls are a smaller club than Kenilworth, and only had seven Under 8’s players. However, this gave them an advantage in that they could develop the team during the games, while we continue to rotate the squad.
Our warm-up routine helped get you focussed, and is a drill you will see even the best sides in the country doing before big matches. Passing the ball between you at the same time as you are running forwards is a skill that needs lots of practice!
Kenilworth started the first game like a team possessed. Sam scored first, closely followed by Alfie and Alice. Our defence held firm, and Berks and Balls only got one try in the first half. The second half was more even, with both sides showing some great defence. Robert L and Daniel both scored, but our defence began to show a strange weakness – even though it was well formed, players were running through. Now you have remembered how to build a defence wall, don't forget to tackle the opposition when they try to run through! Final result 5-3 to Kenilworth.
The second game was closely fought, with Berks and Balls scoring two easy tries. Aiden and Luke pulled two back, but again it was our defence that let us down. Our players also started to run sideways more than forwards, getting no closer to the try line. In the second half, Kenilworth really got going, with tries from Luke, Brynn and two from Brandon. Failing to make the tackles as the opposition ran at us meant that Berks and Balls scored three. Our passing was good, but we could have scored more by running straight… Final score 6-5 to Kenilworth.
As the games were being played back to back, all the players were starting to tire, so we lent three players to Berks and Balls. A big thank you to Alfie, Alice, and Robert Jones. The first half was end to end, with four tries scored by both sides. Luke, Harry, Jordan and Brynn each got one. In the second half, our defence really let us down, and although Robert L scored one, Berks and Balls scored three. Final score 7-5 to Berks and Balls.
Played 3, won 2, lost 1. I think this was a fair result, as we lost the chance to score more tries by running sideways, and let in more tries than we should have done through poor defence. Two simple skills that you all need to remember when playing.
Player of the week – Lions
The standard this wek was high, and after wondering who to give this to, one person quickly emerged as a deserving player – Brandon Holden. Brandon listened to the coaches, ran straight, tackled well, and through his excellent support was in the right place to be passed a ball enabling him to score. Well done Brandon!
And finally
Check out the latest addition to the coaches photos on the web. A big welcome and thank you to Tony!
Xmas Lights in Kenilworth 23 November 2007
A BIG thanks you to those who helped run the stall at the switching on of the Kenilworth Xmas lights.
We sold 57 raffle tickets, and made a further £44.50 from the Hookers Hoop game. A fantastic result.
Thanks to Claire and Albany Summers, Dick and Robert Jones, The Carnduff family, the Hobbins family, and my own "ever patient" wife and son!
Under 8’s Training Session 18 November 2007
Brrrrrrr! Lions and Tigers braved the cold together and, although we weren't out fro long, a few valuable lessons were learnt!
1 - Dress appropriately.
This means wear lots of layers, and even though it may seem funny, try wearing your shorts on top of your tracksuit bottoms! Waterproofs are a good idea if its raining, but no hoods or cords please. Wear a wooly hat to keep your head warm
2 – Rugby is hard work, but determination and a sense of humour will see you through!
The Player Of The Week award was given to you all for doing so well in such atrocious weather!
Don't Forget!
This Friday, the Mini Section has a stall at the switching on of the Xmas lights in Kenilworth. We think our stall is by the Rocking Horse in Talisman Square - see you there for a game of Hookers Hoop! If you can help sell tickets for 20 minutes, it will be much appreciated.
And finally:
Harry Fox lost his boots last week, if you picked up a pair of size 2 or 3 red and black Canterbury Rugby Boots, please let me know.
Keep warm!
Ed
Under 8’s Tigers v Leamington – 11 November 2007
Today the Tigers played a very capable Leamington squad in near perfect conditions. Both squads had 15 players which made it possible for everyone to play - there were 3 games giving everyone a game and a half each.
The first game was a very fast game with a total of 19 tries scored, however the Tigers only scored 8 of these meaning they lost the game 11 - 8. This particular group of players attacked very well but unfortunately relaxed to much in defence letting in to many tries.
The second game had less tries but was equally entertaining. The teams exchanged tries all the way through the game apart from the last 3 minutes when the Tigers defence took over, turning the ball over twice and scoring twice which meant they ended up winning 8 - 6.
The final game was a mixture of both Tigers teams - the first Tigers team played the 1st half and the second Tigers team played the second half. This was a fantastic last game with many very exciting passages of play - more than once both teams prevented tries with 'tags' just a few feet short of the try line. After many frantic attacks the game ended up a draw 9 each.
Overall the Tigers played 3, won 1, lost 1 and drew 1. On reflection this was probably a fair result !!!
The player of the week was Sam Miles because he tried really hard to put into practice all 3 aspects of the game that we are asking the players to think about. These are running straight, supporting each other and holding the line in defence - Sam did all 3 very well this week. Well done Sam.
The learning point for the Tigers this week is that it is 'defence' and not attack that often wins games. The Tigers find it relatively easy to score tries but less easy preventing the other team scoring - consequently for every try the Tigers score the opposition scores one meaning the Tigers never build a good lead. However, if you defend better, and don't cocede as many tries, a lead would develop making it easier to win the games.
REMEMBER - DEFENCE also wins games !!
Under 8’s Lions' Training session – 11 November 2007
A great days training today – well done all of you…
We were focussing hard on two skills – passing and defence.
Passing – this is the quickest way to get the ball around the pitch. Particularly once you start full contact training, you will realise that passing the ball before you get tackled is better than holding onto it too long. This means you have to be aware of where you team mates are, and listen to them talking to you, and you need to talk to them!
A special mention to Bryn Davies for discovering his voice today – lets hear you more often Bryn!
Defence – this comes down to teamwork and trust.
Teamwork, because no-one can defend the whole pitch.
Trust, because you are being trusted by your teammates to look after your bit of the wall.
We stopped the training a number of times to remind you to keep the wall solid. Don't run round the back of the wall, or run forwards on your own as you leave your team open to attack. That said, you all listened really well to the coaches and showed great improvement today.
Under 8’s Lions and Tigers Training Session - 4 November 2007
Despite the foggy start, you all put in some great training today. The matches we played at the end showed again how quickly you are learning and improving.
Key lessons from today:
When you have the ball
Run fast and straight, not sideways.
Look forwards – the same direction you are running!
When in defence:
Hold the wall
Shuffle from side to side to cover the width of the pitch
Walk towards the opposition together
You are all beginning to see how important it is to play as a team. No one player can defend the whole pitch; you have to trust your teammates to look after “their bit of the wall” when defending.
Tigers Player Of The Week
Some weeks it all just comes together for a player, and this week Louis Podmore hardly put a foot wrong. Louis ran straight and worked well in the squad.
Lions Player Of The Week
The award this week goes to Alice Carnduff, for listening to the coaches, and doing as they asked – in particular Alice ran straight (with a few nifty side steps), and good passing.
And finally…
It was good to see so many of you staying on today to take part in the clubs Halloween party.
Don't forget to let me know if you can help run the KJRFC Stall on 23 November in Kenilworth when the Xmas lights are switched on.
Kenilworth Under 8's (Tigers) vs Old Leamingtonians - 28 October 2007
This morning the Tigers had a home game against Old Leamington's in conditions that were perfect for open running rugby. The coaches decided to play 3 games and to give as many players as possible a game. Tigers had 13 players to choose from whilst the OL's had 18.
The first game was very interesting as it appeared that the clocks had gone 4 hours backwards rather than 1 hour back as all the Tigers appeared to still be in bed !!! The attacking was relatively slow and the defence was 'ragged' at best. However, despite a poor start the Tigers got close to OL's only just loosing by 6 tries to 5. OL's had taken the first blood and were very pleased.
After a stern team talk by the coaches the Tiger's improved significantly in the next 2 games. The 2nd game was excellent to watch as the flowing attacks and great support soon resulted in tries. Archie, Finn, Sam, Joe and Adam all scored tries on the way to an excellent 6-3 win.
The honours were now even and all was to play for in the final game. Both sides fielded their strongest teams and the first half was very even at 1 try each. Both sides demonstrated excellent defence and some fast attacking. In the second half both sides exchanged early tries making the score 2 each. But some excellent running by Lyle and support play by Archie led to 2 quick tries to the tigers enabling them to open a lead of 2 tries. This was enough to win the game despite letting in a final try to OL's. Therefore the Tiger's won overall by 2 games to 1.
After the first game this was a fantastic result as it initially looked like it was going to be a long hard morning. It is really important that all players are ready to concentrate and play from the start because better teams will not give us a second chance - it is extremely important we always win the first game !!!
Player of the Week - Kenilworth Under 8’s (Tigers)
Tigers Player of the week goes to Adam Whittle. Adam always runs hard and supports very well, but above all he listens to what the Tigers are trying to achieve and then does his best to put it into practice. Congratulations Adam
Kenilworth Under 8's (Lions) and Under 7's vs Keresley - 28 October 2007
Due to the fact that Keresley have a combined Under 7’s and 8’s squad, we played a triangular fixture today, between Keresley, Kenilworth Under 7’s (Lions and Tigers combined), and Kenilworth Under 8’s (Lions)
The first game was between Keresley and the Kenilworth Under 7’s (Lions and Tigers combined). In a fast flowing match, the more experienced players soon took the home advantage, with a better defence, and stronger support.
The second game was between Keresley and Kenilworth Under 8’s (Lions). As expected, Kenilworth’s experience soon showed through, with tries by Harry Craddock, Brendan Holden, Alfie Boylin (2), and Robert Lester. Daniel Hobbins nearly got one, but was tackled just short of the line.
It was our defence that let us down, as players drifted across to wherever the ball was, rather than hold “the wall” across the pitch. There was some great tackling though, in particular by Robert Jones and Alfie Boylin.
Final score, 6-4 to Kenilworth
The third game was between Kenilworth Under 7’s (Lions and Tigers combined), and Kenilworth Under 8’s (Lions).
To handicap the older side, it was agreed that the Under 8’s must pass every 5 yards they ran. This seemed to give the Under 7’s a clear advantage as, despite passing several times to each other, the Under 8’s kept running sideways. The Under 7’s, however, ran straight and scored five times, thanks to a great team effort. Under 7’s try scorers included: Harry Nixon, Will Canning, and Alexander Eddy. The Under 8’s score was by Sam Hart
The final game was a rematch between Keresley and Kenilworth Under 8’s (Lions). Their loss against the Under 7’s meant Kenilworth Under 8’s came out looking for a win. Excellent team work meant tries were scored by Robert Lester, Brandon Holden, Daniel Hobbins and Alice Carnduff, however poor defence again let our side down, and Keresley scored some easy tries in return.
At the final whistle, the score was 5-4 to Kenilworth
Player of the Week - Kenilworth Under 8’s (Lions)
It is getting very hard to pick out a star player each week in this group; today it was Robert Jones who caught our eye, with some stunning tackles, and great team work. Robert was supporting his team mates really well
A big thank-you to everyone who travelled over to Keresley. I hope you agree they played a great couple of matches
Training Report – Under 8’s Lions and Tigers - 21 October 2007
Sorry I couldn’t be with you today. I have heard great things from the coaches who ran the training session, and I look forward to seeing you soon.
There is still a lot of the chasing about and not making a solid defence wall – something that we need to work on to stop the opposition from scoring tries. Talk to each other, work as a team, support each other.
Lions’ Player of the Week
This week, the award was given to James Greenway for doing his best and being a good team player. In particular James has learnt not to pester the coach with “can I receive/pass the ball” during games. Well done James.
T
